Arizona Daily Star Building…30 N. Church Street

The Arizona Daily Star found its first home in this two-story brick building, constructed in 1884 and designed by Roy Place. In fact, this is likely the architect’s only remaining commercial building in Arizona. It has Italianate detailing including tall, narrow, wooden double‑hung windows on the second story with segmental arches and projecting sills. The first story storefront has been somewhat modified over time; however, the ornamental cast iron columns remain from the original structure. The building clearly represents the San Francisco influence brought to Arizona soon after the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Today the building houses The Fox Theatre administrative offices.

Continue north across Pennington to the middle of the block near Pima County Library and stop at crosswalk. Look across Church St. to the courthouse.
